This Privacy Policy explains how Chatki (“we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, stores, and protects information when you visit chatki.me or use our free random video chat service. It also explains the choices you have with respect to your information and how you can contact us if you have questions or concerns.
Please read this policy carefully before using Chatki. By accessing chatki.me, clicking “Start,” enabling your webcam, or otherwise interacting with our platform, you acknowledge that you have read and understood this Privacy Policy and agree to its terms. If you do not agree, you should discontinue use of the platform immediately.
This policy applies to all visitors and users of chatki.me regardless of location. Where local privacy laws provide additional rights beyond those described here, those rights continue to apply.
1. Who We Are
Chatki is a free random video chat platform that connects users face-to-face with strangers from around the world via live webcam. The platform is available at https://chatki.me/ and requires no account creation, no email address, and no download to use. Chatki operates as a modern alternative to older random chat platforms, offering HD cam-to-cam video, country and gender filters, and a global user base active across 190+ countries 24 hours a day.
For the purposes of applicable data protection law, Chatki acts as the data controller for personal information processed through the chatki.me website. A data controller is the entity that determines the purposes and means of processing personal data.
If you have questions, concerns, or formal requests relating to your personal data or to this Privacy Policy, you can reach our privacy team at [email protected]. We aim to respond to all privacy-related correspondence within 30 calendar days of receipt.
2. Information We Collect
Chatki is built around a privacy-first philosophy. Because we do not require registration, we collect significantly less personal information than most online platforms. However, some data collection is unavoidable when operating any internet service, and some data collection is necessary to deliver, secure, and improve the Chatki experience. Below is a full account of what we collect and why.
Information You Provide Voluntarily
Chatki does not ask you to create a user account, provide your real name, submit an email address, or enter a date of birth to access the random video chat service. The platform is designed so that a visitor can begin chatting within seconds of arriving without providing any identifiable personal information whatsoever.
If you voluntarily choose to contact Chatki through our support channels — for example, to report an issue, ask a question, or submit a complaint — we will collect whatever information you choose to include in that communication. This may include your name, email address, a description of your concern, and any screenshots or attachments you attach to your message. We use this information solely for the purpose of responding to and resolving your enquiry.
If you choose to use optional filter preferences such as country selection or gender filter, the selections you make are processed temporarily within your session to power the matchmaking algorithm. These preferences are not linked to a persistent profile and are discarded when your session ends.
Information Collected Automatically
Like all web services, Chatki automatically receives and logs certain technical information whenever your browser connects to our servers. This data is collected passively and does not require any action on your part. It includes the following categories of information:
- IP address — used to approximate your country for geo-filtering, to enforce rate limits, and to detect and block abusive or malicious activity
- Browser type and version — used to diagnose compatibility issues and optimise the platform for the browsers our users rely on most
- Operating system — used alongside browser data for compatibility and performance analysis
- Referring URL — the web address of the page you visited immediately before arriving at chatki.me, if applicable
- Pages visited within chatki.me and the order in which they were accessed
- Date, time, and approximate duration of your visit or chat session
- Device type, including whether you are using a desktop computer, laptop, tablet, or mobile phone
- Screen resolution and viewport dimensions, used to ensure the interface renders correctly on your device
- Cookies, session tokens, and similar client-side identifiers (see Section 5 for full details)
This automatically collected data is primarily used in aggregated or anonymised form for analytics, security monitoring, and platform improvement. Where IP addresses or session identifiers are retained in identifiable form, they are subject to the retention limits described in Section 6.
Webcam and Microphone Data
To use Chatki’s core video chat functionality, you must grant your browser permission to access your device’s webcam and microphone. This permission request is handled entirely by your browser using the WebRTC standard and is not controlled by Chatki beyond initiating the request. You are free to deny this permission at any time through your browser settings, though doing so will prevent you from participating in video chat sessions.
Once permission is granted and a chat session begins, your video and audio streams are transmitted in real time either directly to your matched stranger via peer-to-peer connection, or via Chatki’s relay servers where a direct connection is not technically feasible due to network configuration. In either case, the stream exists only for the duration of the live session.
Chatki does not record, store, capture screenshots of, archive, or retain any portion of your video or audio stream at any point during or after a chat session. We have no ability to review past sessions because no recording is ever made. Once a session ends — whether because you clicked “Skip,” closed the browser, or the connection was terminated for any reason — the stream is permanently gone and cannot be recovered.
We strongly advise users never to share their real name, physical address, phone number, financial details, or any other sensitive personal information during a video or text chat session. Chatki cannot control what your matched stranger does with information you voluntarily disclose to them during a session.
Text Chat Messages
Chatki allows users to send text messages alongside their live video stream during a session. These messages are transmitted in real time to the matched user. Text messages are not stored on Chatki’s servers beyond the duration of the session and are not reviewed or moderated in real time except where automated systems flag content for safety review in response to a user report. Once a session ends, text chat history is not retained by Chatki.
User Reports
When you submit a report against another user — for example, for inappropriate conduct, harassment, or content that violates our terms — we collect the content of your report and associated session metadata such as the time of the session and a technical identifier for the reported connection. This data is used to investigate the report and take appropriate action, which may include blocking a user’s IP address or referring the matter to law enforcement where required.
3. How We Use Your Information
We use the data described in Section 2 for the following specific purposes. We rely on legitimate interest, contract performance, legal obligation, or consent as the legal basis for each use, as indicated.
Delivering the Random Video Chat Service
The primary purpose for which we process data is to operate Chatki’s matchmaking engine and connect you with a random stranger for a live video chat session. This involves processing your IP address to determine your approximate country, applying any filter preferences you have selected, and routing your connection to an available user who matches your criteria. Without this processing, the core service cannot function. The legal basis for this processing is the performance of the service you have requested.
Safety, Security, and Abuse Prevention
We process IP addresses, session metadata, and user report data to detect and prevent abuse of the platform. This includes identifying and blocking users who engage in harassment, illegal conduct, the distribution of harmful content, or repeated violations of our community guidelines. We may use automated systems to flag suspicious patterns of behaviour, and in serious cases we may take manual action or refer matters to law enforcement. The legal basis for this processing is our legitimate interest in maintaining a safe environment for all users.
Platform Performance and Improvement
We process anonymised and aggregated usage data — including session counts, device types, browser versions, connection success rates, and error logs — to understand how the platform is performing and where improvements are needed. This data helps us identify features that are working well, diagnose bugs, and prioritise development efforts. Because this processing uses data only in anonymised aggregate form, it does not materially affect individual privacy. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in maintaining and improving the platform.
Communication and Support
Where you have contacted us through our support channels, we use the information you provided to respond to your enquiry, resolve your issue, and maintain a record of the communication. The legal basis for this processing is the performance of the service relationship or, where applicable, your consent in initiating the contact.
Legal Compliance
We may process and retain certain data — including IP addresses and session timestamps — where we are required to do so by applicable law, court order, regulatory requirement, or government request. We will notify you of any such disclosure to the extent permitted by law. The legal basis for this processing is legal obligation.
What We Do Not Do
We do not build individual user profiles for advertising purposes. We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal data to third parties for their own commercial use. We do not use your video or audio stream for training machine learning models. We do not use your data to send you unsolicited marketing communications. We do not track you across other websites or services.
4. Sharing of Information
Chatki does not sell your personal information to any third party under any circumstances. We share data only where strictly necessary to operate the service, protect users, or comply with legal obligations, and only with the categories of recipients described below.
Infrastructure and Hosting Providers
We use third-party cloud hosting and server infrastructure providers to store website files, serve web pages, and relay video connections where peer-to-peer transmission is not possible. These providers process data on our behalf under contractual data processing agreements that prohibit them from using your data for their own purposes and require them to implement appropriate security measures.
Analytics Providers
We use third-party analytics tools, which may include Google Analytics, to collect anonymised statistics about how users interact with chatki.me. These providers receive data such as page views, session duration, device type, and general geographic region. They do not receive IP addresses in full, real names, webcam data, or any other information that would allow them to identify you as an individual. You can opt out of Google Analytics tracking by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on available at https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.
Content Delivery Networks
We use content delivery network (CDN) providers to cache and serve static assets such as images, scripts, and stylesheets from servers geographically close to you. This reduces load times and improves your experience. CDN providers may briefly receive your IP address as part of the standard process of routing web traffic but do not retain this data beyond what is necessary for network operation.
Law Enforcement and Legal Authorities
We may disclose data — including IP addresses, session timestamps, and the content of user reports — to law enforcement agencies, government bodies, or courts where we are legally required to do so, or where we believe in good faith that such disclosure is necessary to prevent imminent harm, investigate illegal activity, protect the rights or safety of Chatki or its users, or respond to a valid legal process such as a subpoena, court order, or search warrant. We will make reasonable efforts to notify affected users of such disclosures where we are legally permitted to do so.
Business Transfers
In the event that Chatki is involved in a merger, acquisition, restructuring, or sale of all or a portion of its assets, user data may be transferred to the acquiring or successor entity as part of that transaction. In such circumstances, we will take reasonable steps to ensure that the acquiring entity honours the commitments made in this Privacy Policy or provides you with notice and an opportunity to opt out before your data is transferred to a materially different privacy regime.
5. Cookies and Tracking Technologies
Chatki uses cookies and similar browser-based technologies to support core functionality and gather anonymised usage statistics. A cookie is a small text file that a website places on your device when you visit it. Cookies allow the website to remember certain information about your visit during that session or across multiple visits.
Strictly Necessary Cookies
These cookies are essential for Chatki to function correctly and cannot be switched off in our systems. They include session tokens that keep your chat session active while you are connected, identifiers that preserve your filter preferences such as country and gender selection during your visit, and security cookies that help protect against cross-site request forgery and other common web attacks. You cannot opt out of strictly necessary cookies without disabling your browser’s cookie support entirely, which would prevent Chatki from functioning.
Analytics and Performance Cookies
We use anonymised analytics cookies to understand how visitors use chatki.me in aggregate. These cookies collect information such as which pages are visited most frequently, how long users spend on each page, what types of devices are used, and where users are located at a country level. This information helps us improve the platform and fix technical issues. Analytics cookies do not collect personally identifiable information and the data they gather is not combined with other data to identify you. You can opt out of analytics cookies by adjusting your browser’s cookie settings or by using the Google Analytics opt-out tool referenced in Section 4.
Third-Party Cookies
Some third-party services embedded in or linked from chatki.me may set their own cookies. We do not control third-party cookies and they are subject to the respective third party’s privacy policy. We recommend reviewing the cookie policies of any third-party service you interact with via chatki.me.
Managing and Deleting Cookies
You can view, manage, and delete cookies stored on your device through your browser’s settings menu. Most modern browsers allow you to block all cookies, accept cookies from specific sites only, or delete cookies at the end of each browsing session. Instructions for managing cookies in popular browsers can be found at the following locations:
- Google Chrome: Settings > Privacy and Security > Cookies and other site data
- Mozilla Firefox: Settings > Privacy and Security > Cookies and Site Data
- Apple Safari: Preferences > Privacy > Manage Website Data
- Microsoft Edge: Settings > Cookies and Site Permissions
Please note that blocking or deleting cookies may affect your ability to use Chatki’s session management and filter features. Strictly necessary cookies cannot be disabled without impacting platform functionality.
6. Data Retention
We retain personal data only for as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes described in this policy, to comply with our legal obligations, and to resolve disputes or enforce our agreements. The retention periods we apply to different categories of data are as follows.
Automatically collected technical data including IP addresses and session logs is retained for a maximum of 90 days from the date of collection. After this period, the data is either permanently deleted or irreversibly anonymised so that it can no longer be linked to an individual visitor or session. This retention period allows us to investigate abuse reports, diagnose technical issues, and respond to law enforcement requests that relate to recent activity.
Video and audio stream data is never stored at any point. No recording is made during or after any chat session, and no retention period applies because there is no data to retain.
Text chat messages exchanged during a session are not stored on Chatki’s servers beyond the duration of the session. Once the session ends, text chat history is discarded and cannot be retrieved.
User reports submitted against other users are retained for up to 12 months to allow us to investigate patterns of behaviour, take enforcement action, and respond to follow-up enquiries. After 12 months, reports are deleted unless they are subject to an ongoing investigation or legal process.
Support correspondence — emails or messages sent to [email protected] or other support channels — is retained for up to 12 months after the matter is resolved unless a longer retention period is required by law or is necessary to defend against a legal claim.
Cookie data is retained for the duration specified by the cookie type. Session cookies are deleted automatically when you close your browser. Persistent analytics cookies expire after a period set by the analytics provider, typically between 90 days and 2 years, depending on the specific cookie.
7. Children’s Privacy
Chatki is intended exclusively for users who are 18 years of age or older. We do not knowingly collect, process, or retain personal data from individuals under the age of 18. By using Chatki, you represent and warrant that you are at least 18 years old. If you are under 18, you are not permitted to use this platform and must leave immediately.
We do not have a reliable technical mechanism to verify the age of every visitor to chatki.me. However, we take children’s safety seriously and actively moderate the platform to remove underage users when they are identified. If you become aware that a minor is using Chatki, or if you believe we have inadvertently collected information from a person under 18, please contact us immediately at [email protected]. Upon receiving a credible report, we will take prompt action to investigate and, where appropriate, delete any data associated with the minor and restrict their access to the platform.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to use parental control tools to prevent minors from accessing random video chat platforms including Chatki. We cooperate fully with lawful requests from parents, guardians, or law enforcement relating to the safety of minors.
8. Security
We take the security of your data and your experience on Chatki seriously. We implement a range of technical and organisational security measures designed to protect against unauthorised access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction of the data we process.
All data transmitted between your browser and chatki.me is encrypted in transit using HTTPS with TLS encryption. This protects your browsing activity and any data you submit from being intercepted by third parties on the same network. Video and audio streams transmitted through our relay servers are also encrypted in transit.
Access to our server infrastructure, databases, and log files is restricted to authorised personnel only. We apply the principle of least privilege, meaning that individual team members are granted access only to the data and systems they need to perform their specific role.
We conduct periodic reviews of our security practices and update our measures in response to new threats and vulnerabilities. We use industry-standard tools to monitor for unauthorised access attempts and unusual activity on our systems.
Despite these measures, no internet-based service can guarantee complete security. The transmission of data over the internet always carries some inherent risk, and we cannot guarantee that our security measures will prevent every possible breach or attack. You use Chatki at your own risk. In the event of a data breach that affects your personal information and triggers notification obligations under applicable law, we will inform affected users and relevant authorities in accordance with our legal obligations.
You also play an important role in keeping your experience safe. You are responsible for ensuring that your device, browser, and network connection are reasonably secure. We strongly advise against sharing sensitive personal information — including your full name, home address, financial details, or government identification numbers — during a chat session, as Chatki has no ability to control what the other user does with information you voluntarily disclose.
9. Your Rights
Depending on your country or region of residence, you may have a number of rights under applicable data protection law with respect to the personal data we hold about you. The rights available to you and the circumstances under which they apply vary by jurisdiction. The following is a general overview of rights that apply under laws including the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the UK GDPR, and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), among others.
Right of Access
You have the right to request a copy of the personal data we hold about you and to receive information about how we use it, the categories of data involved, who we share it with, and how long we retain it. We will respond to a valid access request within 30 days.
Right to Rectification
If any personal data we hold about you is inaccurate or incomplete, you have the right to request that we correct or update it without undue delay.
Right to Erasure
Also known as the “right to be forgotten,” this right allows you to request that we delete personal data we hold about you where it is no longer necessary for the purposes for which it was collected, where you withdraw consent on which processing was based, or where you object to the processing and there are no overriding legitimate grounds for us to continue. We will comply with valid erasure requests subject to any legal obligations that require us to retain the data.
Right to Restriction of Processing
In certain circumstances — for example, where you contest the accuracy of your data or have objected to processing — you may request that we restrict how we use your data while the matter is resolved.
Right to Data Portability
Where processing is based on your consent or on the performance of a contract and is carried out by automated means, you have the right to receive a copy of your personal data in a structured, commonly used, and machine-readable format, and to request that we transmit it directly to another controller where technically feasible.
Right to Object
You have the right to object to processing of your personal data where we rely on legitimate interests as the legal basis for that processing. We will cease the relevant processing unless we can demonstrate compelling legitimate grounds that override your interests, rights, and freedoms, or unless the processing is necessary for the establishment, exercise, or defence of legal claims.
Right to Withdraw Consent
Where our processing of your personal data is based on your consent, you have the right to withdraw that consent at any time. Withdrawal of consent does not affect the lawfulness of processing that took place before the withdrawal.
Right to Lodge a Complaint
If you believe that our processing of your personal data violates applicable data protection law, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the relevant supervisory authority in your country or region. In the European Union, this is the data protection authority of the EU member state in which you reside. In the United Kingdom, this is the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). We would, however, appreciate the opportunity to address your concerns directly before you contact a supervisory authority.
How to Exercise Your Rights
Because Chatki does not require registration, we often cannot identify you from session data alone using your name or email address. To submit a rights request, please contact us at [email protected] and provide as much context as possible to help us locate any data associated with your use of the platform. This may include the approximate date and time of your visits, your IP address if known, and a description of your concern. We will respond within 30 calendar days of receiving a valid and sufficiently detailed request.
10. International Data Transfers
Chatki is a global platform serving users in more than 190 countries. To deliver the service, data may be processed on servers located outside your country of residence. This includes countries such as the United States and countries within the European Economic Area (EEA). Different countries have different data protection laws, and some countries outside the EEA do not provide the same level of legal protection for personal data as your home country may.
Where we transfer personal data from the EEA, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland to countries that are not deemed to provide an adequate level of protection by the relevant authorities, we rely on appropriate safeguards to ensure that your data remains protected. These safeguards include standard contractual clauses (SCCs) adopted by the European Commission, which impose data protection obligations on the parties to the transfer and are legally binding.
By using Chatki, you acknowledge that your data may be transferred to and processed in countries outside your own, including countries that may have different data protection standards. We take steps to ensure that any such transfers comply with applicable law and that your data receives a consistent level of protection regardless of where it is processed.
11. Third-Party Links and Services
Chatki may contain links to external websites, references to third-party platforms, or embedded content from third-party services. These third parties operate independently of Chatki and are governed by their own privacy policies and terms of service. This Privacy Policy applies only to chatki.me and does not extend to any third-party website or service you access via a link, button, or reference on our platform.
We are not responsible for the privacy practices, data security, or content of any third-party website or service, even if you accessed it through chatki.me. We encourage you to read the privacy policy of any third-party service before submitting personal information to it. The inclusion of a link on chatki.me does not constitute our endorsement of the linked site or service.
If you use a third-party browser extension, VPN, or similar tool while using Chatki, that tool may independently collect data about your browsing activity. Such tools are outside our control and their use is governed by their own privacy policies.
12. Do Not Track Signals
Some browsers and devices offer a “Do Not Track” (DNT) feature that signals to websites that you do not wish to be tracked across sites. Because there is currently no universally accepted standard for how websites should respond to DNT signals, Chatki does not alter its data collection or usage practices in response to DNT signals. We continue to collect the data described in this policy regardless of DNT settings. You can use the cookie management options described in Section 5 to limit certain types of data collection.
13. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, the features and functionality of the platform, applicable law, or regulatory guidance. When we make changes, we will revise the “Last Updated” date at the top of this page. For material changes — those that significantly affect your rights or how we handle your data — we will take additional steps to bring the update to your attention, which may include displaying a notice on chatki.me at the time you next visit.
Your continued use of Chatki after any update to this Privacy Policy constitutes your acceptance of the revised terms. If you do not agree to the updated policy, you should discontinue use of the platform. We encourage you to review this page periodically to stay informed about how we are protecting your information.
Older versions of this Privacy Policy may be made available on request by contacting [email protected].
